Winterfold – an Independent Public School of Choice
Winterfold Primary is a school with a strong community focus and is situated in Beaconsfield, south east of Fremantle. We are located just south of South Fremantle Senior High School and Challenger TAFE.
As an Independent Public School, our staff and community are committed to using our increased flexibilities to further enhance the learning needs of our diverse student population. These flexibilities include the ability to select our own staff, employ specialists to address student learning needs, and develop our own policies and procedures. Our school priorities and direction are overseen by a School Board.
Winterfold has a cosmopolitan student population with wonderful cultural diversity. The school and the local community share a harmonious relationship with all school events being well patronised by parents. The school provides educational facilities for children aged four to twelve and efficiently caters for student diversity.
The school is grouped into three clusters with a Kindergarten and a Pre Primary on site as well as a Child Care facility. Recent building programs have seen the completion of a new Library, undercover area and refurbishment of a dedicated performing arts centre. We also have a computer laboratory as well as a visual arts room. The school grounds are large, attractive and welcoming and contain two large ovals as well as several playgrounds..
The school employs various Specialist Teachers (Drama, Music and Physical Education) and provides Italian for Years Two to Seven. Selected students in Years Six and Seven take part in the Instrumental Music Program at South Fremantle Senior High School and Year Five to Seven selected students attend a range of Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) courses at various neighbouring schools. We also employ Literacy and Numeracy Specialist Teacher who work with both staff and students and have recently employed an English as an Additional Language Specialist Teacher.
Winterfold Primary has a strong focus on Student Services and Pastoral Care and has a Learning Support Coordinator and School Chaplain. The School has a very stable and highly skilled staff where ongoing collaborative planning is the norm. The leadership structure is very flat with most staff taking on leadership roles. This support enables the school to further enrich the learning opportunities as well as ensuring inclusivity.
With our strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy, teachers plan specifically to cater for all student learning needs. Winterfold’s student behaviour management policy revolves around restorative practices, where students are frequently counselled and where positive incentives dominate.
Winterfold’s size means that it enjoys a community atmosphere with the students and the staff frequently interacting. A recent addition which adds to the community feel of the School is a ‘Living Classroom Garden’ that was developed in close consultation with the Fremantle City Council. The garden has opened up another curriculum avenue where each classroom has the ability to develop and harvest their own individual vegetable garden bed. Our school canteen is also able to access fresh produce to use in student lunches.
Winterfold has an active P&C that does not restrict itself to fundraising – they also organise mother and father parent days and willingly assist in School and community initiatives that may require additional parent help.
To balance our students’ educational opportunities, they have the ability to compete in interschool sports, art competitions and exhibitions, participate in a range of sport clinics and experience a wide variety of cultural performances and excursions.
